The first ever smartwatch from Fitbit is a fitness watch at its heart. Long rumored, the Fitbit Ionic was the company's first true smartwatch. Fitbit has become synonymous with fitness trackersbut with the Ionic the company decided to expand into a whole new market. However, there's now the additional competition of the Apple Watch 5which adds LTE and its best fitness tracking yet, not to mention the incursion of Garmin into the fitness smartwatch space with products like Forerunner Since the launch of Ionic, we've also seen Fitbit introduce three new smaller and more affordable smartwatches called the Fitbit VersaFitbit Versa Lite and Fitbit Versa 2.
If you're planning to buy a smartwatch from Fitbit check these out as they're all cheaper, offer a slimmer design and many of the same features as the Ionic. Plus Fitbit CEO James Park has also confirmed the company has plans to produce a Fitbit Ionic 2 in the future, but there's no clear sign yet on when we'll see that introduced.
Below we're going to focus on the Fitbit Ionic though, so read on below for our full review of the company's very first smartwatch.
Fitbit issues statement on bricked Ionic watches after recent update
The Fitbit Ionic launched as the most expensive wearable yet from Fitbit. The cheaper price makes it a much easier purchase as your next running watch, but it's still not as cheap as some other capable Fitbit products. The Fitbit Ionic is a comfortable fit on your wrist, and compared to a lot of modern smartwatches is particularly light — so much so that you'll instantly notice how lightweight this feels on your wrist, which makes it a more pleasant to wear while working out than, say, the LG Watch Sport.
That said, we found the design to be rather divisive, with friends and family either loving the look or hating it.
There are leather and plastic strap options available with secure fasteners on each so the Ionic won't fall off when you're out for a jog. That said, the bezels are relatively thick on the Fitbit Ionic. Fitbit could have included a much larger and more useful display instead. Also, the Fitbit logo is annoyingly placed just below the screen, taking up quite a bit of room on the wearable.
The resolution of the LCD screen is xand we particularly like how bright it is — it reaches nits, which is the same as the Apple Watch 2 and means you can view it even in bright sunlight when out on a run. We found the touchscreen to be a little slow to respond sometimes, and we often had to move our wrist fairly violently for the raise-to-wake feature to work. Our Verdict The first ever smartwatch from Fitbit is a fitness watch at its heart. For Fitbit Pay works well Great fitness features Solid battery life. Against Controversial design Little bit slow Limited music offering.Fitbit is well known as the number one fitness tracker company and with his Fitbit Ionic model was ready to take over the Smartwatch world as well.
With a clear focus on health and fitness, the Ionic sticks to what Fitbit does best but takes things to a new level with onboard music, built-in GPS, contactless payments and more. If you want to learn more about the other Fitbit models and check how the Ionic compares check our Fitbit comparisonwhich includes a comparison table so you can learn which one suits you the best. The Ionic was first released at the end of Septemberas an upgrade from the Surge and Blaze models, although in the looks department is more similar to the Blaze.
Similar to the Surge are is core features like built-in GPS, the GLONASS system that uses global satellites to provide you the best accuracy when tracking and recording your workouts, the antenna is integrated inside the tracker case giving you the most powerful connection. The Ionic also features SmartTrack, which will auto-recognizes your activity and record it on the Fitbit app. In December the Ionic had a software updated to include support for extra payment options on the Fitbit Pay like NFC payments and a variety of first and third-party watch faces.
The eccentric third-party faces are pretty similar at the ones that used to come with the Pebble watch faces, which makes a lot of sense having in mind that Fitbit acquire the Pebble company on December and took out part of their staff. In a market surrounded by circular smartwatches, the new Fitbit Ionic stands out with its Square shape. Another cool thing is how comfortable the tracker is to wear, even when on your wrist in bed or during exercise. By having slightly tapered sides the contact with your wrist is going to be minimal making it perfect to wear.
The bands come with a quick-release feature that will allow you to swap out the straps with ease. A big number of features are accessed via the touchscreen display, but the Ionic also comes with 3 textured buttons on the sides of the watch, one on the left that can start and put off the screen and also serves as a back button, and 2 context-sensitive function buttons on the right edge.
The display is one of the sharpest and brightest we have ever tested on a smartwatch with a x resolution across its 1. Even under the toughest of bright outdoor conditions, you are going to be able to check your stats, the tracker also comes with sensible auto-brightness adjustments.
The Ionic comes with all the fitness features that you can imagine, as well as all the ones that we like and love from the other Fitbit models plus some upgrades as well.
The Heart Rate Tracking is even more accurate than the other models since the new algorithm update and a design that sits much closer to the skin. When we test the tracker we found that the Ionic was much faster and accurate than the other Fitbit models.

Is something wrong with defective with the update? How do I restart my watch again? Looks like they have finally fixed the control panel being seen everytime you want to look at notifications or battery level.
Thank you. This has been bugging me ever since it changed. Much improved.
